The results showed young males are paying huge amounts more than females for the same type of cover.

AA car insurance quotes third party cover for a 17-year-old girl at £4,155 but the same cover for a boy of the same age is £6,624 – a difference of almost £2,500.

Ian Crowder, from the AA, said: “Young male drivers pay more because they tend to make larger claims than young women.

“Males tend to take more risks and can be encouraged by friends to break driving rules.”

Also most young drivers pass their test in newer cars, yet a driver’s first car won’t be as safe and taking small risks can lead to a big accident.

“Young female claims tend to be because of spatial unawareness and they are less likely to take risks, meaning less expensive claims.
